On February 25th  Gary will give a featured reading and workshop at the University of South Dakota's Vermillion Literary Project Poetry Festival.

On the 26th at Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Gary will give a reading and a workshop.

Gary was named a semi-finalist for the Paumanok Poetry Reading Series Award, but this naturally means he wasn't the winner.

The poem "Coleman Generator Plant: Darrell, Line Supervisor," appeared this month in Anti- fifth issue.

Gary's poem, "From the Dishwater--Lorraine," was printed this month in the North American Review.

Another of Gary's poems, "Bill Bitner at the Henry Doorly Zoo," won a 2009 mnLit "What Light" Poetry Prize.

On November 24th, Gary will give a reading in Omaha, Nebraska as part of Organism: A Festival of Words and Building

Gary's poem, "At 78, Maurita Discovers the Waterslide," appeared this month in Boston University's AGNI.  The poem can be viewed on their website.

On October 29th, Gary will give a poetry reading as part of the John R. Milton Writer's Conference at the University of South Dakota.

Gary's poems, "Bill Bitner's Bundle of Something Identical," and "Bill Bitner Smells," were published in Cave Wall.

August 09

On Aug 14th, Gary competed in the 2009 Twin Cities Funniest Person Contest (a summer-long competition) at Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis.  Gary won Top Comic for this evening of the competition. 

Gary's poem "My Uncle Learns Me How to Keep a Mechanic from Screwing Me Over" was published in Sow's Ear Poetry Review.

July 09

On July 19, Gary will read his poetry along with the other winners of the 2009 What Light Poetry Project competition.  The reading will take place at Mager's and Quinn Bookstore in Minneapolis.  

On July 31, Gary will participate in an alumni panel and reading at the University of Nebraska MFA program.   

June 09

For two weeks in June, Gary will serve as the creative writing instructor for the Summer High School Honors Program in Nebraska. 

May 09

Gary qualified for the Soap-Boxing National Poetry Slam Team by competing in the 2009 Grand Slam in St. Paul.  However, due to previous obligations, he will not compete with the team, which can be followed at http://www.soap-boxing.com/catalog.html.    

Gary also taught two great summer courses during May.  His fiction and poetry students took to the craft like the Emerald Ash Borer on Minnesota's trees.

The Taproot Reading Series, which Gary directs, will feature Minnesota poet Dobby Gibson (www.dobbygibson.com) on April 3rd.  Dobby's latest book SKIRMISH is available from Graywolf press.

At the 2009 International Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) Conference in Minneapolis, Gary read his poetry (4:15-5:15pm - 3.26) and presented a creative writing workshop, "Keeping the Muse from Slipping into a Revision comma  Coma" (3.28).  Alexandra Fuller, Neil Gaiman, and Mike Perry were featured speakers at the convention.

Gary's poems "To the Ice Cream Man," "Minneapolis Snow," and "Guys Like Me," appeared in Blue Earth Review, a terriffic Minnesota magazine (this issue featured Steve Almond, Denise Duhamel, Leigh Allison Wilson, among others).

Gary's poem "Poem of 4 Explanations to Poems at Poetry Readings" appeared in RATTLE, issue #30. 

December 08

Gary won first place in the December Soap Boxing Poetry Slam at the Artist's Quarter in St. Paul.  The slam takes place on the first monday of each month, and they hold an open mic on each of the other mondays.  For more information about one of the hotest poetry events in the Twin Cities:  www.soap-boxing.com

On November 14th, Gary will read his poetry as part of the "Night of the Living Poem" celebration at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis. 

Beginning on November 6th, Gary's poem "On Swearing" will appear in American Life in Poetry, the Poetry Foundation's syndicated newspaper column, edited by Ted Kooser.

Gary's poem, "Monument to the '91 Mil Fire," appeared this month in Whistling Shade's latest Issue.

Gary will be the guest poet at Evangel University (Springfield, MO) on Wednesday, October 10th.

On Thursday, September 25th, Gary was the featured poet and MC at the Univeristy of South Dakota's Vermillion Literary Project Poetry Slam.

On August 21st, Gary's poem "Father, Child, Water" will appear in American Life in Poetry, the Poetry Foundation's syndicated newspaper column, edited by Ted Kooser.

The poem first appeared in New Letters 74.3 earlier this year.

On April 11th, Gary directed the Taproot Reading Series in Minneapolis Elliot Park Neighborhood.  The featured poet was Lee Ann Roripaugh.

On April 19th at Columbia Grounds cafe in Northeast Minneapolis, Gary will read at the Whistling Shade spring issue release.

Gary's poem "Xerxes' Queen" was just published in the latest issue of Poetry Northwest this month.
